Green Policy
OziSite supports Green Policies.
There are many ways that web hosts can help support the environment and fragile eco-systems.
The first method we need to consider is the reduction of carbon and Greenhouse gas emissions from power generating stations. While we have little or no control over the types of emission that power stations create, we can certainly help reduce emissions by reducing the amount of electricity our servers consume.
Just converting our power production to solar will do little to help, as we need to consider the entire spectrum of energy consumed just for you to view a web page.
Let's follow the chain a little. Firstly you are consuming power at your end with your computer, when you open a link power is consumed by your computer, your ISP's servers, every server router you request hops through, the NIC domain name servers, a chain of routing servers to the requested pages host, the web host, then a chain of routers back to your ISP, and finally back to your computer.
There are many more variables guzzling energy along the way, including several telephone or telecommunication companies along the route, and multiple routers, firewalls, and other servers in between that host links to other sites, images etc etc.
So it's easy to see that just loading one single small web page can guzzle electricity all over the world.
How can we reduce power consumption world wide?
One thing we can do is to improve the quality of our web page loading times, by optimizing the software that we use. You can also use smaller or less images that are sourced from across the world, and keep your text as clean and plain as possible. The less requests that a server has to do equates to less energy consumed.
Here at OziSite we have optimized our servers by removing all unnecessary programs with the exception of security measures, and we have installed our own Control Panel on our server to avoid lengthy and unnecessary requests to other international servers.
Our head office is powered by the sun, with the installation of a complete solar energy system, our office computer network now runs for free! Our servers are housed in data centres that also maintain their own Green policies.
Our web sites are optimized to use less resources by simply cutting out all the "bloat" found in other CMS portals. By optimizing our servers, this will help reduce the load on every other electrically powered server that your page requests pass through.
While probably not much of a contribution in reducing carbon emissions, we do know that if other web hosts implemented changes to help conserve world power, it would all begin to add up to as a substantial contribution towards saving our planet.
You too can do your bit by simply turning your computer and modems off at the wall when you are not using them. Don't leave it running all day, get into the habit of having session times where you turn your computer on for several hours a day. Don't send unnecessary emails, surfing the net is fine if you really need the information for a purpose. Ban porn sites that waste energy with the massive amounts of images and trojan scripts the distribute around the net. If you are seeking text information, then try turning off the option to load images in your web browser. This will speed up your page load times, without all the adverts and pop-up images.
Reduce the file-size of your images. Not sure how? Then Google for "How to reduce image file sizes?" and see how to retain image quality yet minimize the size of the file from megabytes down to bytes.
